The new Maruti Ertiga 2018 has been launched. The car’s price starts at Rs 7.44 lakhs (ex-showroom). There will be now CNG variant offered and also there will not be a automatic with any diesel variant at the moment. There was also talk that a new six-speed gearbox will be brought with this generation; for now there are no plans of that too. Book a test drive for Ertiga in Hyderabad at Tryaldrive

Maruti Ertiga Exterior & Style

On the road, the new Ertiga grabs more attention than the first generation model. The heavy usage of chrome on the front grille might not be to everyone’s liking, but it certainly makes the new Ertiga eye-catchy. The busy design of the bumper and headlamps further make the front look striking. Daytime running lights, whether integrated within the headlamps or on the front bumper, would have added a touch of modernity and given it a premium feel. Hopefully, aftermarket kits will be able to cater to these needs.Unlike the front, which might polarize opinions, the rear will appeal to most. The three-part tail lamps with LED lights climb on to the D-pillar and look stylish. Sharp creases on the boot lid that extend to the bumper make the rear look crisp. The Ertiga has gained 40mm in width, but it isn’t noticeable unless both the first- and second-gen models are placed side-by-side.

A thick shoulder line runs from the front fender to the tail lamps and cuts some bulk of the big doors. The floating roofline adds a modern touch to the design. 15-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels look similar to the ones on the Indonesia-spec Ertiga and, in my personal opinion, do not do justice to the otherwise striking front and smart rear. The new Ertiga measures 4395mm in length, which is 99mm more than the outgoing model. And it does look longer, especially when you look past the C-pillar.New Ertiga’s colour palette has five options to choose from — Auburn Red (maroon), Oxford Blue (same as the Dzire’s blue), Magma Grey (same as the Dzire’s grey), Silky Silver (same as the Dzire’s silver) and Pearl Arctic White (same as the Dzire’s white). Dark colours like black, brown or even the Swift’s Midnight Blue might have made the Ertiga look more appealing.

Maruti Ertiga Interior & Comfort

The interior of the new Maruti Ertiga gets a beige colour scheme which lends an airy feel. Expectedly, a lot of switches/knobs are shared with other Maruti cars but still the cabin feels like a nice place to be in. There are some plasticky bits around but quality has definitely improved over the older car. The dashboard’s design is neat with controls falling within easy reach of the hand. The elongated AC vent design on the passenger side of the dashboard reminds us of the Audi Q7. Storage spaces in the cabin are aplenty, all the doors have 1-litre bottle holders along with space for other nitty-gritties.

In terms of features on offer, the new Ertiga gets quite a lot and it even shares most of its features with the Ciaz. The equipment list includes a SmartPlay infotainment system with navigation, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto (same unit that we’ve seen on multiple Maruti cars), automatic climate control, passive entry with push button start, cooled cup holders in the centre console and 12V charging sockets in all rows. However, the Ertiga misses out on some features like auto-dimming IRVM, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlamps.

The front seats are large and offer good comfort. Outward visibility for the driver is excellent thanks to the large glass area. The seats get supportive cushioning and things are even better at the rear with the increased space. The rear seat is also quite comfy and roomy. It can also be rake adjusted for more space and reclined for better comfort. It comes with a centre armrest too. The third row is wider by 34 mm and leg room has increased by 70 mm but it is still suitable only for kids because knee room is limited and a tall person can fit only if the person sitting ahead has pushed his seat ahead. The third row seat can also be reclined. With all rows up, boot space is 290-litres but it can be expanded to 550-litres with the third row folded down and 803-litres with the second row folded too.

Maruti Ertiga Engine & Performance

In terms of engines, there will be a new 1.5-litre petrol engine that will produce about 103bhp of power and 138Nm of torque. The petrol engine will be offered with the five-speed manual and a automatic four-speed gearbox from the Ciaz. There will be no CNG option available with this engine. It was thought, that a factory fitted unit will be offered. The 1.3-litre diesel engine will produce about 90bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. This is the old DDIS 200 engine and will come with a five-speed manual. There was a expectation that the diesel will come with a new six-speed manual and a AMT option. Maruti seems to be ready to offer AMT on all its vehicles now. Recently the Vitara Brezza also got launched with an AMT in diesel. There is a chance of the Ertiga also getting a diesel AMT later on.

The engine feels more lively with the 5-speed manual transmission than with the 4-speed automatic unit, which is a torque converter. The automatic transmission is more suited for relaxed and not spirited driving. It takes its own sweet time to respond (change gears) to accelerator inputs, so overtaking manoeuvres will require a bit of planning. Claimed fuel efficiency for the more powerful petrol engine is more than the 1.4-litre, 92PS engine, and that could be down to the mild-hybrid technology. The 1.3-litre, 90PS diesel engine is the same unit that powered the new Ertiga’s predecessor. It’s been carried over unchanged but the claimed fuel efficiency for the diesel-manual powertrain has also gone up by almost a kilometre to a litre but that could be due to the fact that the newer version is lighter by about 20kg.

Maruti Ertiga Driving Dynamics

The suspension on the new Maruti Ertiga gets a soft setup and ride quality is just excellent. The MPV tackles bad roads very confidently and feels much more stable too compared to the older car. But, the steering could have done with more feel and feedback. Body control is very good even though there is some body roll. This car isn’t really meant for driving fast on the corners, it’s more about cruising. Braking performance is also very good while the tyres have decent levels of grip.

Maruti Ertiga Braking & Safety

The new Ertiga is available with dual front airbags, ABS, EBD, Isofix child seat mounts and front seatbelt pretensioners with load limiters as standard. With those features ticked, it meets the minimum requirement for us to recommend it to buyers in any variant. Features like speed-sensitive auto door lock and central locking are also standard. The variants with automatic transmission get ESP and hill hold feature.

Maruti has launched another blockbuster and the new Ertiga is going to be a sales success just like the older model. It offers good space and comfort, many features and excellent fuel economy. The new Ertiga is also priced attractively and at this price point, there is no other car that comes close to this. The Maruti Ertiga’s compact proportions and spacious cabin make it an ideal family car.
