Jaguar XE Hatchback First Drive Review

Jaguar XE Overview

Jaguar XE is a premium compact sports sedan from the stable of Jaguar that comes with an elegant but powerful look. It has a sturdy build and is equally at ease in city roads as well as in uneven off track drive. The Jaguar XE images that the company released during Auto Expo 2016 shows an amazing designed car with commanding presence and style. It falls in the above 4-meter category and has remarkable features that give it an edge over its rivals in the market that are within this price bracket.

Jaguar XE is available in two different trims; one of them is called the Jaguar XE and the other is called Jaguar XE 2.0L Petrol Pure2.0L Petrol Portfolio. This well-built sedan has a big 2835mm of wheelbase that allows it to seat around 4 passengers comfortably. The design of this SUV looks masculine and the comfort level of this car is on par with other such vehicles in this price category. Check for HDFC car loan at Fincarz.

Jaguar XE Design & Look

At the glimpse of the XE, the first impression we get is of the new XJ. The honeycomb mesh grille comes with the red growling cat and sharp headlamps. The fascia of the XE holds some similarity in design to the other Jags. The headlamp LED layout is new and this is carried forward on the upcoming Jags. Design by Ian Callum and his team, the XE has perfect sculpted proportions, with a long bonnet and the boot size is in proportion with the sloping roofline. The rear haunch is muscular indicating that the power is delivered through the rear wheels. The side profile is typical Jag, and the design DNA is carried forward. The rear styling is identical to other Jags and the tail lamp design has been inspired from the legendary E-Type. The XE comes with 17-inch tyres, our press demonstrator had Pirelli.

The XE has been built on the new iQ [Al] platform. This is an all aluminium platform and Al stands for Aluminium. This will be used to make the new XF, XJ and even the F-PACE. The new-gen vehicles are lighter due to the use of aluminium. This gives XE an advantage in its segment.

Jaguar XE Cabin & Co,fort

The cabin of the XE diesel is very much like its exterior, understated. The dashboard is neatly laid-out but is quite a mixed-bag of premium as well as not so premium materials. For instance, some buttons have the click sound which just robs away the premium quotient. That said, the air-con controls are neatly laid-out below the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Overall the cabin is a nice place to be in and comes loaded with features. In this Prestige trim, you get leather upholstery, interior mood lighting, Meridian Sound system, cruise control and speed limiter, dark satin brushed aluminium inlays and power folding and auto-dimming heated door mirrors with memory function.

The front and rear seats offer good support and comfort but the headroom is a little tight owing to the sloping roofline. Anyone below 5’10” should be comfortable in the rear seat. However, due to the tall transmission tunnel and protruding rear AC vents, the third passenger would feel he/she was uninvited. The 455-litres boot is as practical as it can get. Unlike the Mercedes C-Class and the BMW 3-Series, the XE’s boot is flat and wide and moreover, the space saver tyre is neatly tucked away under the floor.

Jaguar XE Engine & Transmission

We’ve experienced this Ingenium diesel on a Jag before on the XF, but the punchy nature of the engine is more in keeping with the XE’s sporty pretensions. The engine feels quicker than its 9-second 0-100kph time would suggest and kickdown acceleration is good too, though its rivals are faster still. The engine bunches up its power for release at 2000rpm and till 4000rpm, progress is strong. You can rev on and even hold gear at the 4900rpm limiter in manual mode but the eight-speed gearbox does such a nice job of things on its own, you’ll be happy to let it do its thing. In Dynamic drive mode, the gearbox gets the best out of the engine by selecting the ratio that keeps revs near the 2000rpm mark. Resultantly, there’s no delay in the build of power and the XE just lunges forward as and when you need it to. The XE also adapts well to a relaxed driving style. The gearbox keeps engine revs and noise levels low. It’s just that the engine isn’t as quiet as it ought to be. Throttle inputs are usually accompanied by a grumble from the engine and there’s a drone in the mid-range too. You just won’t get the same sense of calm in the cabin as you would in the beautifully insulated A4 35TDI, though a BMW 320d is noisier still.

It’s actually the 320d that the XE 20d can be best clubbed together. Both cars are designed to put the driver at the heart of the action. And like its petrol siblings, the XE diesel succeeds in this quest, and how. The steering is straight up incredible and there is a very natural balance in the chassis that makes the XE a joy to drive on curvy roads. Yup, we can’t wait to bring it head-to-head with a Bimmer either. Ride quality, again like the petrols, is really good too. There is a great balance between body movement arresting firmness and ride-enhancing suppleness in the suspension setup, and only on occasion will the XE thud and thump on our roads.

Jaguar XE Driving Dynamics

The ride of the XE is smooth. It has been tuned for better handling, but for India it has tweaked for better ride also. Drive on broken tarmac or even at high speeds. It irons out most of the road shocks for front and rear passengers making it extremely comfortable for the occupants. The handling of the XE is just fantastic. What makes it even better is the steering feedback. The steering wheel weighs up as speed increases. Most of the sedans in this segment now have electronic steering wheel that is extremely light and kills the joy for those who enjoy driving.

Jaguar XE Braking & Safety

While the after sales network isn’t as great as its German rivals, the Tata-owned brand is steadily expanding and is committed to giving peace of mind to its customers. In terms of safety features, the XE Diesel gets multiple airbags, Surround Camera System (offered in the top-end Portfolio trim only), Start/Stop System, Torque Vectoring, Dynamic Stability Control with Traction Control, ISOFIX child seat mounts, Hill Launch Assist and Jaguar Smart Key System (keyless entry, offered in the top-end Portfolio trim only).

Jaguar XE Round Up

If you are interested in an XE diesel, you’ll be best off extending your budget and splurging on the Portfolio trim, which at Rs 43.21 lakh (ex-showroom, India), costs about the same as top-spec rival sedans. But, and this is important, if you are willing to do so, why not just go for the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol-powered XE 25t Portfolio that actually costs about Rs 1 lakh less. It will be more expensive to run than the diesel but a sporty sedan like the XE needs a fitting engine. And in our books, the 25t’s 240hp petrol is it. For price details on Jaguar Xe check AutoZhop.
